As a Midnight Ambassador, this article is my personal interpretation and vision of how Midnight’s existing shielded assets concept could be developed into a user-friendly private finance application in the future.

Imagine you have a bank account. But everyone in the entire world can see your balance, your transaction history, and where your money goes. Uncomfortable, right? Yet that’s the reality on most public blockchains today.

Midnight Network already has the technical foundation to change this through the concepts of shielded assets and the shielded ledger. In this article, I will share my interpretation of how this foundation could be developed into an application I call “Shielded Vault” —a digital safe where your assets remain private, only you can see the details, but they remain auditable if needed.

Important note: “Shielded Vault” is not an official name from the Midnight Network. This is my personal interpretation and vision as a Midnight Ambassador about the potential development of applications on top of Midnight’s infrastructure. What already exists today is the technical foundation: shielded assets, shielded ledger, and zero-knowledge proofs.

The Problem: Your Crypto Wallet Is Naked in Public

On blockchains like Ethereum or Bitcoin, all transactions are public. Anyone can view your wallet balance at any time, track where your money flows, analyze your transaction habits, and link your on-chain activity to your real-world identity.

This isn’t just a privacy issue. It’s also a security issue. If people know you’re holding large amounts of assets, you become a target for hacking or even physical attacks.

Some blockchains try to hide transactions completely, like Monero. But the “hide everything” approach makes regulators uneasy. With no transparency at all, it’s difficult to prevent money laundering or terrorist financing.

Midnight takes a middle path: selective privacy.

My Vision: Shielded Vault with Zero-Knowledge Proofs

According to my interpretation, Midnight has enormous potential to give birth to what I call the Shielded Vault. This application would allow you to:

  • Store assets with a balance that only you know
  • Make transactions without everyone seeing the details
  • Still prove to auditors or regulators that your transactions are legitimate

All of this is made possible by zero-knowledge proof technology, which is already a core foundation of Midnight. You could prove you have sufficient funds for a transfer without revealing how much total funds you have.

A Simple Analogy

Imagine you have a safe at a bank. The safe has a small slot. You can put money in through that slot, and you can take money out through that slot. But no one—not even the bank teller—can see how much money is inside the safe.

The only person who can “see” inside the safe is you. But if a regulator shows up with a valid warrant, the safe can be opened for an audit.

That’s my vision of Shielded Vault.

How Midnight’s Technology Supports This Vision

Midnight already has three technical foundations that I believe are strong enough to realize an application like Shielded Vault:

Shielded Assets are a type of asset on Midnight whose data is hidden (private), unlike unshielded assets which are transparent. Each asset stored as shielded has a cryptographic “commitment” stored on the blockchain, not its actual value.

Shielded Ledger is Midnight’s ledger that stores sensitive data in encrypted form. Only the data owner can access it. Meanwhile, the Unshielded Ledger stores public data that needs to be verified by many parties.

Zero-Knowledge Proofs enable the creation of mathematical proofs that a transaction is valid without revealing the transaction’s details.

With these three foundations in place, I believe developers in the future could build applications like Shielded Vault. In fact, even today, users can already manage shielded assets through wallets like Lace Wallet, which has integrated with Midnight.

Benefits That an Application Like Shielded Vault Could Offer

Complete Financial Privacy

Your balance and transaction history would not be visible to anyone. Neighbors, colleagues, even digital criminals wouldn’t know how much assets you hold.

Still Auditable

If you ever needed to prove tax compliance or the source of funds for a property purchase, you could provide cryptographic proof without revealing your entire transaction history.

Controlled Costs

Applications on Midnight would use DUST tokens for transaction fees. DUST is generated for free from holding NIGHT tokens and has a 7-day expiration period. This means network usage costs would remain stable and wouldn’t spike when crypto prices rise.

Protection from Front-Running

On public blockchains, bots can see your transactions and react before they complete. On an application like Shielded Vault, because transaction details would be hidden, bots couldn’t do this.

One Vault for Multiple Assets

The vault could store various types of tokens. You wouldn’t need to create separate vaults for each asset type.

Who Would Need an Application Like This?

According to my interpretation, an application like Shielded Vault would be very useful for:

Individual DeFi users who want to lend, borrow, or provide liquidity without everyone seeing their financial positions. Freelancers and gig workers who receive payments in crypto but don’t want clients or colleagues to see their total earnings. Small businesses that transact regularly with suppliers but don’t want competitors analyzing their transaction volume and patterns. Investors and traders who want to keep their investment strategies private. And anyone who cares about privacy and feels uncomfortable with the fact that all their crypto transactions can be seen by the entire world.

Future Use Case Scenarios

Saving for an Emergency Fund

You want to set aside 10% of each paycheck in crypto as an emergency fund. With an application like Shielded Vault, you could make regular deposits every month. No one would know your total savings—including the platform where you store them.

Receiving Payments from Clients

You’re a freelance graphic designer. Clients pay you in stablecoins. With Shielded Vault, clients could see that the payment arrived, but they wouldn’t be able to see your total balance or where your money flows afterward.

Proof of Assets for a Loan

You want to apply for a crypto-backed loan. The bank or lending platform needs to know you have sufficient assets. With Shielded Vault, you could prove that your balance is above a certain threshold without revealing the exact amount. Just mathematical proof: “I have more than $100,000” without saying “I have exactly $250,000.”

Existing Integration: Lace Wallet

Although a Shielded Vault application isn’t available yet, the foundation for managing private assets on Midnight is already being built. In April 2026, Lace Wallet—a popular multi-chain wallet in the Cardano ecosystem—announced integration with Midnight.

This means users can now manage their Midnight assets directly from Lace Wallet, in the same interface as their Cardano assets. They can manage both transparent and private transactions in a single integrated interface.

This is an early step toward a larger vision. If users can already manage shielded assets through a wallet, then according to my interpretation, it’s not far-fetched that applications like Shielded Vault will emerge to simplify the experience into something as easy as a regular bank account.

The Path Toward Realizing This Vision

What’s already available today:

  • Midnight’s technical foundation (shielded ledger, zero-knowledge proofs)
  • Midnight integration with Lace Wallet for managing shielded assets
  • Developer tools (create-midnight-dapp) for those who want to build applications like Shielded Vault

What still needs to be developed:

  • User interfaces as simple as a regular banking app
  • More advanced vault features (automation, scheduling, etc.)
  • Mass education about the concept of selective privacy

What developers can do today:

Developers interested in building applications like Shielded Vault can get started using create-midnight-dapp—a CLI tool to bootstrap a Midnight dApp project with built-in wallet connection.

Challenges Toward Realization

The technology is still new. Midnight’s mainnet only launched in March 2026. The application ecosystem is still in its early growth stages.

User interface design. For mass adoption, a vault application would need a very simple interface—no less easy than a regular banking app.

User education. The concept of “proving without revealing” is still unfamiliar to most people. Education is needed for people to trust and feel comfortable using this technology.

Cross-vault liquidity. For now, transfers between different shielded assets may still be limited. But this will grow as the ecosystem develops.

Conclusion: My Vision for a More Private Financial Future

As a Midnight Ambassador, I see that Midnight Network has enormous potential to realize what I call the Shielded Vault—a user-friendly private finance application.

For too long, users have been forced to choose between radical transparency (like on Ethereum) or total anonymity (like on Monero). Midnight offers a third path: you can choose what to reveal, to whom, and under what conditions.

Today, the foundation is already in place. Shielded assets and the shielded ledger are already functioning on Midnight. Lace Wallet is already integrated. Developers can already start building. What’s needed now is time, education, and user-friendly interface development.

For those who have long felt uncomfortable with the “nakedness” of crypto transactions on public blockchains, this vision is a breath of fresh air. That one day, there will be a way to enjoy the benefits of decentralization without sacrificing personal privacy.

Midnight has laid the foundation. Now it’s just a matter of who will build the house on top of it—perhaps you could be one of them.
