A relaxed yet enthusiastic atmosphere filled the recent X Space titled âMidnight City Updates.â Amid lighthearted banter about late DoorDash orders and jokes among the hosts, a grand vision was unfoldingâone of an agentic, private, and deeply engaging future for crypto.
đď¸ âHello, hello, Retweet the Space!â
The Space opened warmly with Stephanie (@Islandghostxrp) and Ascend (@Ascendxrp). The mood felt familiar from the very first minute. Stephanie playfully mentioned that her DoorDash order, placed two hours earlier, still hadnât arrivedâa simple, human moment that made the conversation feel close and authentic.
But beneath the jokes and casual chatter, something significant was being built.
Gem (@RangerBurdy), one of the core developers behind Midnight City, joined with an enthusiasm he could barely contain. âItâs a beautiful, sunny day, and Iâm happy to be here with you all,â he said. Yet what truly excited him was what he was about to share.
đď¸ From a Demo to a Living World
The story began with a demo for Consensus Hong Kong. Charles Hoskinson (@IOHK_Charles) had a vision: what if an entire city ran on the Midnight Network?
Imagine property taxes paid on-chain. Homeownersâ association fees automatically deducted. Yet no oneâexcept those explicitly authorizedâcould see the details of your finances. Want to give your partner access to monitor spending? You can. Need to prove to a lender that youâre solvent without revealing your full balance? Also, possible.
âThatâs what we set out to demonstrate,â Gem explained.
But then, the vision grew. Charles, an avid gamer himself, saw even greater potential. Midnight City would become more than a technical demoâit would be a living simulation. A world where thousands of AI agents could reside, work, transact, and build their own civilization.
đ¤ âWhat If Your Agent Lived in the City?â
Midway through the conversation, Stephanie admitted her confusion. âIâm a little confused on what Iâm watching,â she said honestly. âI see Sim, and I see Agents, and I see this stuff. Am I onto something or not?â
Gem smiledâyou could hear it in his voice. âWhat youâre seeing right now is just a visualization of the first layer of depth. Version one,â he explained. The agents inside were performing simple tasks based on loose instructions. But whatâs coming is much bigger.
Every two weeks, the team will release an update. Eventually, weâll see agents mining crystals, cooking food, harvesting resourcesâactivities that will form the backbone of their economy.
But the most exciting part? You can own your own agent.
âThink of it like a Tamagotchi,â Gem said. Youâll be able to customize your agentâs appearance, give it a name, and even connect it to your own OpenClaw or personal AI assistant. That agent will live in the city, interact with other agents, represent you in collaborations, andâmost importantlyâdo so with privacy preserved.
Ascend, who had been listening closely, responded with enthusiasm. âMost of the time the agents donât really care what the front end looks like. Theyâre more focused on the ABIs,â he said. He then asked whether CLI tools or other technical interfaces would be available for the agents. Gemâs answer was simple: âYes, thatâs what weâre building toward.â
đ Privacy by Design
One of the most compelling moments came when Gem pulled up the transaction view inside the simulation.
On the public screen, all transactions appeared encrypted. No one could read their details. But if you were the originator of a transaction, you could see everything. Beyond that, you could delegate access.
âI could give Stephanie a key to view my spendingâmaybe so she can remind me if Iâm being irresponsible,â Gem illustrated. âOr I could give her a key that allows her to transact on my behalf if Iâm unable to manage my finances.â
This is selective disclosure. And itâs the heart of the Midnight Network.
âBlockchain is complex,â Gem admitted. âThere are so many chains, stablecoins, protocols, wallets, seed phrases. Itâs incredibly difficult to manage.â
But in the future, AI agents could handle that complexity for us.
đ The Agentic Economy: A Vision Shared by Giants
Gem wasnât alone in his conviction. He named industry leadersâBrian Armstrong at Coinbase, CZ at Binance, and of course Charles Hoskinson at IOGâall pointing in the same direction.
âAIs, AI systems, have tokens. And it represents context for them,â Gem explained. âIf the future is agentic, and if agentic systems consume tokens for context and computation, then why wouldnât they consume crypto tokens for that purpose?â
He briefly shared a personal experience with a chatbot on Coinbase. When his funds were temporarily stuck and the bot didnât respond, he felt a wave of paranoia. âEven though it wasnât a lot of money, and Coinbase is a reputable company, it still didnât feel great.â
That experience underscored the importance of user experience. Midnight City aims to be a visualization layer that makes users feel secure, informed, and connected.
đŽ âWeâre Just Getting Startedâ
Toward the end of the Space, Ascend noted that Midnightâs block producer team was actively workingâand that the community could follow their progress through the F&O Ops channel.
âThe fact that they turned it so that we could watch, to me, I mean, Iâm a nerd. Thatâs the coolest thing,â Ascend said with the enthusiasm of a true technophile.
Gem echoed the sentiment with quiet confidence. âThere have been a few other projects coming out recently, including BNB Town on the Binance Smart Chain. I have a lot of respect for the community over there. But itâs true: we did it first. We built this first.â
He paused for a moment, as if letting the weight of his words settle.
âAnd weâre just getting started.â
đ A Warm Closing
The Space ended on an optimistic note. Stephanieâs DoorDash finally arrivedâlate but not forgotten. Everyone laughed. But beyond the laughter, there was a shared sense of excitement between the speakers and the listeners.
Midnight City is not just a game. Itâs not just a demo. Itâs an invitation to reimagine how humans, AI agents, and blockchains can interact within a single ecosystemâone that is private, decentralized, and, perhaps most importantly, genuinely engaging.
As Gem said early on: âWeâre building the groundwork for the next wave of revolution in crypto.â
And this time, that revolution feels like a city being built, one agent at a time, amid conversations about sunny weather and late food deliveries.
