You want to buy a used car. The price is right, the condition looks good. But you hesitate: what if the odometer has been tampered with? What if this car was flooded before? The seller says it’s “original,” but where’s the proof?

This situation is familiar to anyone who has ever bought a used car in Indonesia. And the statistics are alarming: 70% of used cars in Indonesia have tampered odometers. Our used car market is worth $8.15 billion—a market flooded with “lemon” vehicles.

But there’s new hope. A project called Ototentik is combining Cardano blockchain, Arweave permanent storage, and Midnight’s privacy layer to put an end to these fraudulent practices.

The Problem: A Used Car Market Lacking Transparency

Imagine buying a used car showing 80,000 km on the odometer. Six months later, an official service center reveals the car has actually traveled 180,000 km. The odometer was rolled back by a dishonest seller. Your loss could tens of millions of rupiah.

The problem goes deeper than just odometers. Many used cars:

  • Were once flooded but sold as “normal” cars
  • Suffered major accidents but are claimed to have “minor scratches”
  • Have missing or falsified service records

Worst of all: centralized vehicle databases at certain institutions can be “helped” with bribes to erase bad records.

The Solution: Ototentik, a “Digital Twin” for Used Cars

Ototentik is a collaboration between PT Inspeksi Mobil Jogja and the Cardano-Midnight blockchain ecosystem. They are building a “digital twin” for every inspected car—a permanent record that no one can alter or delete.

The founder, Dunung Lintang Asmoro (a Gadjah Mada University Mechanical Engineering alumnus), has collected thousands of inspection reports over the years. He realized that trust is the biggest problem in the used car market. The solution isn’t just another app—it’s a system that cannot be manipulated, even by its creators.

The project was previously known as CAR-dano and received 60,000 ADA in funding from Project Catalyst. Now it has evolved into Ototentik, integrating Midnight for privacy protection.

How It Works: Three Technologies, One Goal

1. Physical Inspection

Inspectors from PT Inspeksi Mobil Jogja visit the car’s location. They conduct 150-point inspections: brakes, engine, chassis, body, interior, even recording engine sounds. All photos and notes are captured using an Android tablet app that works offlineoffline—if there’s no signal, data is stored temporarily and automatically syncs when connectivity returns.

2. Permanent Storage on Arweave

Photos, videos, and reports are uploaded to Arweave—a “permanent” storage network paid for once and lasting up to 200 years. No more dead links or lost data.

3. Digital Certificates on Cardano

Inspection results are minted as NFTs on the Cardano blockchain. There are two token types:

  • Reference NFT: Stores dynamic data like current mileage
  • User Token: Given to owners as proof of ownership of their car’s “digital twin”

Crucially, only registered inspectors can create or update records. This is controlled by transparent smart contracts—no bribes possible.

4. Private Verification with Midnight

This is where Midnight comes in. Using zero-knowledge proof technology, buyers can ask: “Has this car ever been in a major accident?”

The Midnight system generates mathematical proof: “Yes” or “No.” Buyers get accurate answers without ever seeing the previous owner’s sensitive data (name, address, phone number). This complies with Indonesia’s Personal Data Protection Law.

Simple Flow: From Inspection to Sale

During inspection: The inspector examines the car, takes photos, records findings. One click sends all data to Arweave and Cardano.

During sale: Buyers simply scan a QR code on the car or enter the chassis number on the Ototentik website. They see:

  • Photos of the car’s condition during inspection
  • Recorded mileage history
  • “Red Flag” warnings if something seems off (e.g., an ad claims 40,000 km but blockchain records show 80,000 km)

During private verification: Want to know if the car was flooded? Click a button, and Midnight answers “Yes” or “No” without revealing the previous owner’s personal data.

The Team Behind Ototentik

Dunung Lintang Asmoro – Founder of PT Inspeksi Mobil Jogja, Gadjah Mada University Mechanical Engineering alumnus Fahmi Hatta Gymnastiar – Co-Founder, also a Gadjah Mada University Mechanical Engineering alumnus Gigi Hidjrika Aura Adkhy – Project Manager, Gadjah Mada University DTETI student

They work with 15+ field inspectors who will use this app daily.

Why This Matters for Indonesia

Indonesia has unique challenges: beyond tampered odometers, many flood-damaged cars from Jakarta are “washed” and sold in other cities without any trace. Even official government databases can sometimes be “adjusted” with money.

Ototentik offers a different approach:

  • Bribe-proof – Even developers cannot alter data once it’s on the blockchain
  • Long-lasting – Evidence photos stored for 200 years on Arweave
  • Privacy-compliant – Adheres to Indonesia’s data protection law using Midnight’s ZK technology
  • Easy to use – Inspectors just log in with Google, buyers just scan a QR code

Their goal is simple: detect at least 10 manipulation cases and save consumers from potential losses of Rp 500 million during the trial period.

Challenges

Market adoption. Indonesians are still used to buying used cars based on “gut feeling.” Convincing them to always check blockchain records takes time.

Midnight readiness. Ototentik depends on the Midnight Mainnet, scheduled for March 2026. If delayed, they will launch an initial version with public metadata first.

Education. But with a simple interface (just scan a QR code), they hope people can use it immediately without understanding the underlying technology.

Conclusion: A Fairer Future for Used Cars

Ototentik is a real-world example of how blockchain solves everyday problems. Not just trading or speculation, but consumer protection against fraud.

Imagine someday buying a used car by simply scanning a QR code, seeing photos of its actual condition, verifying its true mileage, and getting mathematical proof that it was never flooded—all without trusting the seller’s word.

That’s the future Ototentik is building. A future where “trust” is no longer necessary, because everything is proven in code.
